Unique

The sea of life
Forms us all
We don a shell
Some big some small

We chose the colors
We chose the shape
We chose the strength
We build our escape

The waves beat down
The currents move
The salt gets caught
In all our wounds

Our shells get chipped
And scratched
And worn
Sometimes we cry
Or fight
Or mourn

We have swum
The havoc's wreaked
We have become
Absolutely...

Unique

Life is a journey.  Sometimes it's a battle.  Sometimes it's exploration.  Sometimes it's sight-seeing.  Sometimes it's riding the waves.  All too often we forget that everyone is on a journey.  We forget that no two journeys are alike.  We forget that we are all different.  We get so wrapped up in our journey and our perspective that we don't appreciate the uniqueness of those around us.  This makes my heart weep.

When we crawl into our shell we lose the gift of others perspective.  We lose the gift of others kindness and compassion.  We lose love.  And so do they.  We are all unique.  We all have something to contribute to this world.  We all have a distinctive gift.  We all have a peculiar view of the world.  When we reach out to each other, we broaden our experiences.  We increase our wisdom.  Our love grows.  Our world benefits.

I have often told my children that everyone has something to offer.  Everyone you meet has something they can teach you.  Isn't it time to celebrate how wonderful it is to be unique?
